Pienza, the city founded by Pope Pius II

Terrecotte Pienza is located on the Strada Statale 146 in Pienza, one of the most beautiful medieval towns in Val d’Orcia and Tuscany. Today, Pienza remains an untouched gem, almost frozen in time, with its traditional pottery shops and a breathtaking view of the beautiful Siena hills, where the multicolored cypresses create a one-of-a-kind landscape.

Pienza lies by the Via Cassia, a short distance from popular historic sites San Quirico d’Orcia and Castiglione d’Orcia. Pienza is also very close to two towns renowned for their exceptional wines, Montepulciano and Montalcino.

A UNESCO World Heritage Site

In 1996, UNESCO declared the Pienza city center a World Heritage Site. The extraordinary historical and artistic wealth of the town is concentrated in the beautiful square dedicated to Pope Pius II, a great man who, during the Renaissance, strived to make Pienza his 'ideal city'.

The project for this human-sized city was entrusted to architect Bernardo Rossellino. Despite being only partially completed, it remains one of the most significant examples of humanist urban planning in the Italian Renaissance.

On one side of the square is the striking Renaissance Cathedral, on the other, Palazzo Comunale, Palazzo Borgia, and Palazzo Piccolomini. Another attraction in the vicinity of Pienza is the Romitorio, a series of grottoes carved in sandstone by hermit monks. One of the grottoes houses a curious sculpture of a six-fingered Madonna.
